SAS AVID

What is AVID?

One of the electives offered to SAS students is AVID. “AVID’s goal is to prepare all students in a school for college, starting with the core elective class and expanding school-wide.” For more information about this elective, visit the website

     Ms.
Manligas's
AVID class is focusing on Bloom's Taxonomy and Tutorials this semester.  Bloom's Taxonomy will help students' critical thinking skills that, in turn, will help them think at a higher level in their classes.  They will use Bloom's Taxonomy later on when students discuss through Socratic Seminars, Philosophical Chairs, Debates, etc.  For tutorials, the students are learning how to fill out the Tutorial Worksheet and Point of Confusion, how to work in collaborative groups, and how to guide others in finding answers to their questions.

 What are AVID Tutorials?

Tutorials are similar to college study groups.  SAS AVID teachers want to provide their      students with  the tools they need in order for them to take the initiative to form working      groups.   After  reviewing the entire AVID Tutorial process, Ms. Tinoco's AVID students      kicked off their  first complete tutorial process in their AVID elective.  From completing        a Tutorial Request  Form, sharing their 30-second speeches, to working collaboratively      and using inquiry,  AVID students are taught and encouraged to work as a unit to              increase academic  achievement.  Ms Tinoco said, "It is wonderful to see students at        different levels working  together to polish  skills, get problems solved, and help one          another.  These transferable  skills make all the  difference in students’ lives."

A Field Trip to UC Irvine

Rather large, naturally beautiful, and partly remodeled… UC Irvine is an amazing campus! AVID and Leadership students from our school trekked UCI on Friday, September 18, 2015. Students were able to explore a variety of buildings, the library, bookstore, and fields. Edison students particularly enjoyed their one-hour lunch on campus and the diversity of eateries available. Our students learned about this great public university that is now #9 on the “Best Schools List” according to U.S. News and World Report. Tuition cost is currently $11, 220 per year, which many UCI college students believe is a fair price for a phenomenal education. Many Edison students had an eye-opening experience, and some shared they felt motivated to do well in school to apply to a school like UCI.

Thank you, students, staff, administrators,

parentsucirvine.jpg, and chaperones for making this trip possible!
